

U.S. Congressman, Civil War Officer. A native of New York, he moved with his family to Sandusky, Ohio when he was 11. After the Civil War began in 1861, he enlisted in the Union Volunteer Army with the 2nd Regiment, Ohio Cavalry and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company I. He participated in several major battles including the Wilderness and Cold Harbor and was present when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865. He was mustered out with the remaining members of his regiment at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the war, he became a general passenger agent for the Ohio and Mississippi Railway Company where he was employed for thirty years until he was elected to the Ohio State Senate as a Republican in 1895. When his term expired, he ran for Congress and was elected to represent Ohio's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives. Shattuc served three consecutive terms from 1897 to 1903 and was the chairman for the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization during his final four years in office. He declined re-nomination in 1902 and retired to his residence in Madisonville, Ohio where he died when he was 70 years old.
