William married 22-year-old Ellen Scammel, daughter of Emmanuel Scammell, Labourer, in the Church of St Mary at Dinton, Wiltshire on 5 January 1918 and changed his Next-of-Kin to his wife at Rose Cottage, Dinton.
William left England on 6 September 1919 on board Berrima, disembarking in Brisbane on 8 November 1919 with his wife and child. He was discharged from the A.I.F. in Brisbane on 1 January 1920, entitled to wear the British War Medal (12208) and the Victory Medal (12049).
