About William Smiley
William came to America with his parents and two brothers, settling in Haver- hill, MA in 1727 and then in Windham (now Londonderry), NH in 1743. After his marriage, he and Sarah moved to Jaffrey, where he was one of the first settlers ...was first town clerk, treasurer and member of first board of selectmen (1773); representative to the legislature (1784) under state constitution, which he helped formulate as a delegate to the constitutional convention in 1781. Believed to be well-to-do, he loaned the State considerable sums during the Revolutionary War, the repayment of which enabled him to send two sons to college. In 1810, leaving his farm to son Hugh, he and Sarah went to reside with their son, Robinson, in Springfield, VT.
