About William L. G. Soule
His family became part of the newly formed New England Emigrant Aid Company, an organization whose goal was to help settle the Kansas Territory and bring it into the Union as a free state. He and father arrived in Kansas, near Lawrence, in November 1854.
William was city marshal of Lawrence at the time of the Quantrill raid. For a description of his part in that tragic affair, along with that of his sister and mother, see O. w. McAllaster, "My Experience in the Lawrence Raid," Kansas Historical Collections, v. XII, pp. 401-404.
