About William Stone
William -- b. ca. 1725 in Stafford Co., VA. m. ca. 1747 to Hannah Conway in Prince William Co., VA. d. ca. 1788/1789 in Randolph Co., NC.
William Stone was born in 1725.
William Stone, was the son of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish that the Stones of N.C. descend through. He was born around 1725 in Stafford County, Virginia. He was married around 1747 in Prince William County, Virginia to Hannah Conway. Verification of the marriage is in "Sheriff John Crump’s Account Book" for Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia for the period 1751-1755.
John Stone (b 1727) was the third son of Thomas Stone (of 1699) not the first born. John Stone was the father of Reuben and Elias Stone (amongst other children). John Stone married in 1748 in Prince William County, Virginia to a woman named Mildrudge “Milly” Corder (also written Mildredge or Mildred Corder). Mildred, nicknamed Milly was the daughter of John and Patience Corder. After residing in Virginia for the first 17 years of their marriage, John and Milly purchased 200 acres of land in Craven County South Carolina. This is clear in the land records where John and Milly Stone are shown selling their property in Fauquier County on the 26th of Sept. 1775. In that same year (1775) John Stone purchased land and moved to Laurens Co. South Carolina with his wife Milly Corder. From that point on John Stone and Milly Corder made South Carolina their home. John Stone died before 17 March 1800 in Laurens County S.C.
These assertions are based on the research evidence, of a relative of ours, aptly named William Stone. His research also includes DNA evidence (performed in 2005) that proves the common ancestral link
When his father, Thomas Stone (b. 1698, d. 1756) passed away, William and Hannah left Virginia and moved to North Carolina. On 3 September 1758, William applied for a grant of 320 acres on Flat Creek, Granville County, North Carolina. He later received a patent for this land during the month of February 1762. March 1770, William sold his Flat Creek property, and he and moved his family to Surry County, North Carolina. William also applied for a grant of 280 acres of land on Belews Creek in Surry County on 22 December 1778. He subsequently obtained a grant for this land in 1780. William and all five of his sons were shown in the 1782 list of taxable inhabitants for the Belews Creek area of Surry County.
8 February 1786, William and Hannah sold their Surry County property and moved to Randolph County, North Carolina. William and Hannah later purchased 90 acres 16 of land on Caraway Creek on 10 April 1786. They eventually received a grant from the state of North Carolina for an additional 168 acres of land along Caraway Creek in 1788. Because the recording fees for this property were paid by William’s son, Conway Stone, it is believed that William probably died in about 1788/1789 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Hannah, on the other hand, he is also believed to have died there in 1792.
