Lost in WWI fighting for Australia
The 44th's last major action of the war was fought between 29 September and 3 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. William was killed in action on the first day of this battle, and first buried "south of Bony", west of the road (perhaps this was the medical station near the rear). His mother signed a litter for his British War Medal as "Elizabeth Jane Streeter" of 57 Poulson St, Addington, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Dan writes, "Lance Corporal William Sendall Streeter was my grandfather Robert Kessler's second cousin. They are related by Cornish blood of the Lukes family from St. Blazey, Cornwall through their mother's sides. William's mother Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Lukes was a first cousin of Robert's mother, Roseland Lukes. "
