About William Terrell, I

Surname Origin: The Old surname Therrell indicates:"son of Therrell" variant of the Old Norse name Thorold. This is ultimately derived from the Norse name: "Thoraldr". Thoraldr is comprised of two words: One being "Thor", the Old Norse God of war and agriculture and "Valdr", the Norseword for "rule". This surname dates back to 1086 in the variant form of "Tirel". A Sir Walter Tirel is listed in the doomsday book of Essex. Some suggest that William was born in 1633 in Thoen, Yorkshire, England. Others suggest his father was John Therrill, a mariner, who was born in Instow Parish, Devonshire, England. This John settled in Boston.

History: William was one of three brothers, two of whom came to America, and one who remained, or was retained, in England. The first recorded knowledge of our William Therrill is that of his marriage in Boston: "William Therrell and Rebecca Simpkins, dau.of Capt. Nicholas Simpkins were married 29th 11 mo. (1654) by Richard Bellingham, Governor." It will be noted that William was married by the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and not by a Minister of the Gospel. Civil marriages were the custom at this time. The first marriage celebrated with Prayer Book and Ring did not occur in Boston until 1686. William and Rebecca (Simpkins) Therrill had four children as recorded in Volume 9 of the Report of the Boston Record Commissioners.... In his will, William Therrill called himself a "Merchant--Taylor. "Undoubtedly, he was engaged in trading. As stated before, the uniform spacing of his children suggests that he spent a great amount of time away from home. "Ships from Boston to Albemarle Sound brought articles needed by the Planters. These ships then took cattle and lumber from Albemarle to the West Indies, which they traded for sugar, molasses and rum. On the return trip, the ships again stopped at Albemarle, trading their West Indies cargo for tobacco, which they took to New England and eventually to Old England. This was all accomplished at a good profit in supreme defiance of the Statues, which enriched the Yankee merchant faster than the Lord Proprietors of the Colony." (Old Virginia and Her Neighbors - Page 270) William's will was sealed in wax with the impression of a swan in the wax. No significance of the swan impression has been found. Maybe the seal belonged to the family of Maj. Samuel Swann, a resident of the area. It is not a recognizable device of any known Tyrrell Arms. 1 3 4
