Lanarkshire is a former county in southern Scotland; Lanark was the coun ty town. The county, sometimes called Clydesdale, was the scene of the de feat of the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots, at Langside in 1568. The Coven anters fought several battles in Lanarkshire in the 17th century. With t he exploitation of local iron ore and coal in the 19th century, northern L anarkshire, especially the Glasgow and Clyde Valley area, became Scotland 's major industrial region. In 1975 Lanarkshire was incorporated into t he newly created Strathclyde Region.
