About William Vick, Sr.
William VICK , Sr. (Joseph D. VICK , Sr.5, Richard VICK4, James VICK3, Richard VICK2, Thomas VICK1) was born Abt 1695 in Lower Parish, Isle of Wight County, VA, and died Abt 1778 in Southampton County, VA.
From Joseph Vick of Lower Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia and His Descendants, vol. I:
pp 26-27
William wrote his will on 15 February 1777. Describing himself
as"being through age weak of body" and signing with his mark, he gave his
widow Elizabeth the plantation on which he resided for her use during her
lifetime. His son Simon received a plantation of 240 acres, a tract of 1 00
acres on Little Swamp adjoining Epaphroditus Williams, a parcel of 70
acres, a slave named Peter, and £10 or half of the distillery utensils. Son
Robert received a 200 acre plantation "where he now lives" on the west side
of Little Swamp, the slave named Rose, and £ 1 0 or half the distillery
utensils. Granddaughter Rebeccah Pope received 100 acres which were to
be used by her mother, Mary (Vick) Pope, until her death. His eldest son,
William, received only 5 shillings, which suggests that he had already been
provided for. After the death of his widow, the balance ofthe estate was to
be divided between these children: Simon Vick, Robert Vick, Isaac Vick,
Elizabeth Pope, Mary Pope and Martha Barrett. Sons Robert and Simon
were appointed executors. The will was witnessed by Jacob Vick, Matthew
Vick, and Lewis Bryant. It was filed for probate 9 June 1778.9
The children of William and Elizabeth, proved by his will, born in Isle
of Wight County, Virginia:
WILLIAM3, b. ca. 1730; m. MARTHA BOYKIN.
SIMON, b. ca. 1732; m. PATIENCE [ ].
ROBERT, b. ca. 1734; m. POLLY [ ].
ISAAC, b. ca. 1735; m. [?MARY COLEMAN].
ELIZABETH, b. ca. 1738; d. after 1778 in Southampton County, Virginia. Named
Elizabeth Pope in her father's will, she was evidently the wife of SIMON POPE.
Both Simon and Elizabeth witnessed a deed between William Vick and Simon Barrett on
1 October 1770. Simon Pope's will was probated on 7 January
1796. Children, probably with others, surnamed POPE: 1.
Simon, 2. Nancy. The children were named as orphans of Simon
Pope on 17 December 1803 . Nathan Pope, apparently their
uncle, posted a $500 guardian'S bond. 10
MARY, b. ca. 1740; d. date uncertain, probably in Southampton
County, Virginia. She m. HENRY POPE, who died intestate
before 14 July 1791. Mary was appointed administratrix, with
John Thomas Blow and William Crichlow as auditors. In the
1794 will of her brother William, Mary's land is mentioned as
adjoining that of William Whitehead and nephew William Vick
[#69]. Children, perhaps with others, surnamed POPE: 1.
Rebecca, who inherited 100 acres adjoining the "Fish Pond"
from her grandfather Vick, 2. Nancy, named as an orphan of
Henry Pope on II February 1791 under the guardianship of
Lemuel Roe and on 16 January 1798 under the guardianship of
Mills Darden. 11
MARTHA, b. ca. 1743; d. after 1798 in Southampton County,
Virginia. She m. SIMON BARRETT or BARET before 1770.
On 1 October 1770, her father sold Barrett 100 acres on the
north side of Little Swamp; the deed was witnessed by Edward
Barrett and in-laws Simon and Elizabeth Pope. In his will, in a
bequest to Simon Vick, her father mentioned a tract ofland that
was "part of the tract I gave to Simon Baret". Simon Barrett did
not leave either a will or probate record. 12

William and Elizabeth were people of standing and substance in the community. William was appointed surveyor of the highway. Edward Barnes and William Vick, Jr. were ordered to work on the project. The inventory of his estate filed after his death reported personal property valued at 743.9 pounds. This placed him second only to his brother Richard Vick in net worth. William wrote his will on 15 Feb 1777. He gave his widow Elizabeth the plantation on which they resided for her use during her lifetime. His son Simon received a plantation of 240 acres, a tract of 100 acres on Little Swamp. Another parcel of 70 acres, a slave named Peter, and 10 pounds of half of the distillery utensils. To Son Robert received a 200 acre plantation "where he was living at the time" on the West side of Little Swamp. Also, a slave named Rose, and 10 pounds or half the distillery utensils. Granddaughter Rebeccah Pope recieved 100 acres which were to be used by her mother, Mary (Vick) Pope, until her death. His eldest son, William, recieved only 5 shillings, which suggests that he had already been provided for. After the death of his widow, the balance of the estate was to be devided between these children; Simon Vick, Robert Vick, Isaac Vick, Elizabeth Pope, Mary Pope and Martha Barrett. Few public records remain of William.
He sold or conveyed to his children almost a thousand acres of land, there are not extant records of how or from whom he acquired it.
Purchased 70 acre tract on Main Blackwater Swamp from his brother Richard around 1719. No recorded deed but Richard referred to the sale of that tract 'to my brother William Vick by me' when he sold the adjoining property to Lewis Bryan. (Isle of Wight Deed Book 2:298, County Clerks's Office, Isle of Wight.
Some time before 1730, William married Elizabeth. (Col. Arthur commented that the belief among her descendants is that she was a Newitt and based this on the name's use as a given name in succeeding generations. He speculated that she may have been a sister or, more than likely, a niece of the William Newitt who left a will in Isle of Wight County in 1713). (Col Robert Arthur, Vick (New Orleans: Typescript, 1959).
On August 13, 1752 he was appointed surveyor of the highway. Edward Barnes and William Vick, Junior were ordered to work on the project. ( Southampton Co. Court Order Book I:251, County Clerk's Office, Courtland, VA)
March 9, 1758 - William was sued by his brother Richard because William did not repay the money he borrowed. William was forced to pay the debt plus court costs. (Southampton Co. Court Order Book 2:375). It has been stated that William was just under in value of property and such as his brother Richard -that is his net worth was close to his brother
May 1758 William conveyed a 150 acre tract to his son Robert (Southampton Co. Deed BK 2:230)
12 yrs passes before he is found on any court records, being: October 1, 1770 he sold a a 100 acre tract on Little Swamp to his son-in-law, Simon Barrett.
December 9, 1773-William and his wife Elizabeth sold another tract to Benjamin Worrell
William did retain title to most of his holdings until the end of his life, although the children lived on the properties they later inherited. ________________________________________ Found on Ancestry.com
