The Mercury - Wed 26 November 1879
Mr. William Wells, a resident of thirty-six years
standing at Circular Head, died on the 11th inst. at
the age of 68 years. He arrived at Adelaide in the
second passenger ship to that port, and remained
there about three years, leaving (at the very time
he should have stayed) with hundreds of others in
consequence of the then great depression at Ade-
laide, Mr. Wells went to Melbourne, where things
were no better, sheep selling at two and sixpence
per head, stores, horses, and stations given in! This
was prior to the discovery of gold, or the commence-
ment of the boiling down establishments. He crossed
the Straits to Launceston, and subsequently came
with his family to Circular Head, and purchased a
section of bush land--- eighty acres--- from the V.D.L.
Company, who guaranteed to take all the produce
of the farm at a certain figure for seven years. Mr.
Wells and his sons struggled hard, and after many
years of toll succeeded in making a comfortable
home. He leaves a widow, seven sons, two
daughters, and forty-three grandchildren.
