Comments from Anderson's Great Migration Study Project:
The basic genealogical compilations have muddled treatments of the early William Whites of Essex county.Savage has three entries. Pope went to the other extreme, cramming Ipswich and Haverhill records into a single entry, and ignoring Newbury.
In order to untangle these contradictory claims, we examine first the Newbury records for William White. The first three items in the ESTATE section above are for grants of land at Ipswich to a William White in late 1634 and early 1635, all made prior to the arrival of passenger vessels in 1635. Combining this with the knowledge that many of the passengers on the Mary & John in 1634 did settle first in Ipswich, we conclude that the William White who came on that vessel did settle at Ipswich. Did he, however, move in the following year to Newbury, as several of his fellow passengers did? We conclude that he did not, based on the continuity of records for the Ipswich man .... And, as we shall see below, James White, William White's son, made a number of conveyances of land that were originally part of the two-hundred acre farm of William White.
We conclude, then, that the William White who sailed for New England in 1634 on the Mary & John settled soon after arrival in Ipswich and remained there until his death in 1684. Anderson's Great Migration Study Project.
