He married Agnes, Daughter to Ralph Fitz-Ralph, Lord of Tiverton, and by her had Pagan de Cherchile, whofe swon Roger Had Free-Warren in his Lands in Cherchile, in the Reign of Edward I.
  • To this Roger fucceeded Elias de Churchelle, whofe Wife was Dorothy, a Daughter of the ancient Family of Columbiers, and by her had three Sons, John, who married Joan, Daughter and Co-heir to Roger Dawney of Norton, and left only two Daughters his Co-heirs, Margaret, the Wife of Andrew Hilberfdon of the County of Devon, and Agnes, married to Thomas Gifford, of Theuborough in Cornwall, whereby the Lordfhip of Churchill and other Lands devolved on them.

  • With this Roger, the Son of Pagan, lived cotemporary, Richard de Cherchile, who Ann. 14. Edw. I. was Witnefs to the Agreement made between the Brethren of the Hofpital of St. John Baptift, in Bath, and Thomas de Hereford, one of the Burgeffes of Briftol, about a Houfe in Reedclive, in the Suburbs of Briftol, of the Fee of Berkley.
  • Who was the Wife of Roger, I likewife, do not find ; But his Succeffor was Elias de Cherchile. I find mention made of one Otho de Churchill, as a Defcendant of Sir Bartholomew de Cherchile, who was the Founder of a fpreading Family in Devonfhire, Sommerfetfhire and Wiltfhire ; But by him muft probably be meant this Elias, or elfe one of the nine Sons of John Churchill, the Son of William Churchill of Mufton, Efq ; of whom, I fhall make farther Mention below. Of this Elias, we find, that Ann. 8. Edw. II. he granted to John Bampfield, his Meadow call'd Pleynfold, in Clifton. He married Dorothy, a Daughter of the ancient Family of the Columbers, by whom he had Iffue three Sons, (1.) John Churchille, of Litlar, of whom we find, that he was Witnefs to a Charter of Thomas Bampfield, Ann. 5. Richardi II. and who is likewife mentioned in another Charter, Ann. II. Henry IV. He married Jane (or, as fome Authors fay, Joan) Daughter and Coheirefs of Roger Dawny, of Norton, by Juliana his Wife, the Daughter and Coheirefs of William de Widdebere. He had Iffue only two Daughters, his Coheireffes ; Margaret, the youngeft, was Wife of Andrew Hillerfdon, of Devonfhire, and Agnes, the eldeft, Wife of Thomas Gifford, of Therwborough, in Cornwal, who by that Marriage, became poffefs'd of the Lordfhip of Churchill, and other Lands. (2.) Giles Churchill, who had the Lordfhips of Yampton and Lineham , in Devonfhire, which Eftates defcended, by a Daughter and Heirefs, to the Family of the Crokers, of Devonfhire, Lords of Lineham. Thefe two elder Brothers dying thus without Male-Heirs, '(3.) William, the third, and youngeft Son of Elias, was the chief Male-Heir, who propagated the Family.'
