FORMER SENATOR FROM DISTRICT, W. I. BETTS, DIES

William Irvin Betts, 76, former Pennsylvania State Senator and past-Burgess of Clearfield Borough, died Monday, August 19, at the Miller Nursing Home in Wilkinsburg where he has been a patient since November, 1944.

He was born in Clearfield, June 2, 1870, the son of the late Senator W.W. and Margaret Irwin Betts. He was educated in the Clearfield schools, Greenwich, Conn., and Peekskill, N.Y.

Mr. Betts played a leading part in the early mining development of Clearfield County and served as president of the Conestoga Coal Company and the Clearfield Quarrying Company.

Mr. Betts was elected burgess of Clearfield in 1906 and to the Pennsylvania State Senate from the district in 1922.

Always interested in Clearfield, he served on many community projects. Among these was the executive charimanship of the Liberty Loan Committee of Clearfield County and the Philipsburg District the first presidency of the Clearfield County Council Boy Scouts of America, a directorship of the Clearfield Young Men's Christian Association, a trusteeship of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church, the presidency of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce. He also service without compensation and at his own expense in the Y.M.C.A. with the 37th (Budkeye) Division overseas during the First World War.

He married the late Isabel Holt Murray in 1904. He is survived by one sister, eight grandchildren, and the following children, Mrs. Robert Kurtz and William I. Betts, Jr. of Clearfield, Thomas M. of Wilkinsburg, and Donald of Woodstock, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held at the Leavy Fneral Home Thursday, August 22, at 2 p.m. It has been requested by the members of the family that flowers be omitted.
