I knew [Winthrop] back in the late 1960's and early 1970's in Key West Florida. He was a Lt. Commander in the US Navy during WW2 and had a son that also served. He had a retirement but preferred living o the street most of the time. His favorite thing was rescuing kittens, loading them into his grocery cart that he pushed around, trying to find them new homes. I had heard that he died in 1971, homeless, in Miami, from a hit and run accident while he pushed his cart. I was still living in the Keys at the time. I believe that there was an article posted in the Miami Herald or possibly the Key West Citizen which was run by Bill Huckle at the time. Bill was later murder when doing an investigative story..May God Bless Winthrop Lee Biddle. In reading some other sites, It was reported that he died in New Jersey, si I am not entirely sure of the story. Just thought that I would pass to you a piece of personal history about him.
