About Worthen Augustus Gove, Sr.

(The following is taken from the Gove family tree that I have, which basically details Worthen Augustus Gove and his descendants. This family tree was compiled, to the best of my knowledge, by one of my Grandfather John Andrew Laitinen Jr's. Gove cousins, and subsequently a copy was given to him.)

"We are descendants of Worthen Gove, 1819-1897, who was the 8th generation of American Goves and the only son of William Gove, 1794-1833. Born at Seabrook, N.H., July 12, 1819, at the age of 13, he walked from Seabrook, N.H. to Lynn, Mass., and found work with a painter, John Chase, who was a relative. He took Chase's cows to pasture in Nahant and tended them from the threat of wolves and bears. Later he took up shoemaking and was subsequently employed by the proprietors of the old Nahant Hotel as Captain of the Yacht, which was used for taking out fishing parties. He became one of the owners of the "Spray," a schooner hailing from Nahant. Later, with his sons, he built the schooner "Frederick Tudor." The "Frederick Tudor" was sold and the schooner "Lizzie Phillips" was built for them by Captain & Snow, of Lynn, being hauled by oxen to the harbor. Lastly, Worthen Gove was a painter.

Worthen Gove married, Emeline, Augusta Spencer, of Salem. Worthen died at Nahant on March 28, 1885..." (this date is different than the death date in the first line). "He and his wife were both 17 years of age when they married...." Then, the tree lists their children.

"We have records of 11 children, but Charles Edward Gove said that his father had 16 children. Worthen Gove acquired a piece of property on Nahant Road, where he had a house and another building. This property was later sold to the Parish of St. Thomas Aquinas and Worthen's house was the rectory for many years, the Catholic Church being built in 1872. The Goves occupied this building while the church was being built. My father related that, as a baby, his mother was by the window, and because he was crying, she left the window to care for him. Immediately after she left a huge plank fell from the staging of the church and crashed through the window. His crying saved her life!"

(I'm not sure if this last story was written by the original author of the family history, who was William Henry Gove, or if it was written by Richard Sumner Gove, who was My Great Grandmother Ruth Bertha Gove's brother. Richard Sumner had made some revisions later and it may have, in fact, been one of his children who gave my Grandfather a copy. If it was written by Richard Sumner Gove, then the story would have obviously been referring to my 2x Great Grandmother, Annie White Henry. At this point I am actually still not sure who William Henry Gove is, as far as how he fits into the family tree and how he is related to me.)--R. Woosley
