Zedekiah K. Barnard, known as Zed, was the oldest child of Samuel and Nancy Barnard, and was born in Tennessee in October 1822 as can be verified on page 129 of the store book¹.

During the probation of the estate of Dudley J. Barnard, we find further evidence of Zedakiah. In the proceedings of the probate court of Webster Co., Missouri, dated 12 October 1904, Allen D. Barnard stated that “Zeddie K. Barnard was a brother to Dudley” and that Zedekiah was the son of Samuel. At this time, Zed’s heirs were unknown but if any were living they were known to be located somewhere in Texas. Following extensive research there has been no record of where in Texas Zedekiah emigrated.

It is with extreme regret that his writer failed to find the location in Texas of Zed, Sarah, and Jonathan’s home, or they are the only children of Samuel and Nancy, whose heirs are not noted in this record.

Zed married Sarah Narcissus Clifton January 28, 1847 in Greene Co., Missouri. He was actually enumerated twice in the 1850 census, once at home with his parents and again in Wright County with his wife and two children.

After the birth of their first two children, Francis and Mary, about 1861, Zed and Sarah migrated to Hopkins County, Texas, near members of her family. They are found in the 1860 and 1870 Hopkins County, Texas censuses.

Sarah is shown as widowed in the 1880 census which would indicate that Zed Barnard died between September 14, 1870 and June 26, 1880. He and Sarah had four children.

Noble Nay failed to find a marriage record for Zed, or his sisters Sarah and Dianah. Actually the were married within two weeks of one another, all at home in what was at that time, Greene County.

¹ When speaking of the “store book” Noble Nay is referring to the books of “Barnard and Bottom” a country general store operated by Samuel Barnard and Charles I. Bottom. Noble Nay states, “the author has in his possession two books of the daily sales records of that firm…Many interesting and unusual items appear in these records, and from which we have received untold data that could not have been secured from any

Other source.”
