About Juriaen Abels Westfall

Juriaen left the Netherlands on 6, June, 1642, on the Ship " DeHoutwyn." He came to the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (Manhattan Island) in August of 1642. He moved up the river to Fort Orange (Albany) and worked off his indenturement (seven years) as a farmer, for Killian Van Rensselaer. At age 20, he married the girl next door Marritje (Mary) and had six kids. He farmed on the island of Papscanee up the Hudson River. The British took over the Dutch colony in 1664 by force, and renamed it New York. Even so, the Dutch language, religion, and money was used there for the next 100 years. Juriaen was killed leading British troops in an Indian raid.

Juriaen was recorded as a passenger on the ship 'Den Houttuyn' in 1642. He came from Luyderdorp in Holland, which is probably the current Leiderdorp, a municipality near Leiden. (paragraph added by George J. Homs, June 19, 2011)

Note: (Westfall,Westvall,Westvael). Juriaen arrived in New Amsterdam on 11(or 4)August 1642 aboard the ship "Den Houttyn",Capt. Adriaen Dircksen,Cdr. The ship left Texel,Holland 6 June 1642. He was a farmer and stockraiser. Juriaen had one of the best farms on Papscanee(Papsichine)Island. His surname is often spelled "Bestvall" in records. He signed documents with a three-pronged trident mark. He was originally a farmhand, brought over as an indentured servant by Kiliaen van Rensselaer(a wealthy diamond and pearl merchant of Holland who owned large landholdings in New Netherland) and served in the home of Michael Jansen. Juriaen was killed by Esopus Indians while guiding a troop of British soldiers against the Indians. Juriaen is said to have actually been Juergen Westphal,bapt.12 Mar.1621 at Stettin,Pommerania (now Poland),son of Joachim Westphal and Elizabeth Utecht of Poelitz, nr.Stettin. Still others believe that Eliz.Utech/t was wife of Nicholas Juria(e)n Westfall. Research by Doug Westfall in Luyderdorp, however, shows that this immigrant to New Netherland born 1629 was son of Nicholas Jurian van Westphalen, who was son of Jurian Westphalen. This Juriaen and wife are ancestors of Gen. William Stark Rosecrans (1819-1898) and his brother Sylvester Horton Rosecrans; Hudson van Etten (1871-1941),recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor; Gloria Laura Vanderbilt; Lawrence Schoonover; Edward D. Wood Jr.; Cissy Patterson; Robert Ludlum; Frank Earle Schoonover; Vance Brand; Cornelia Adele Strong; Joseph Milton Long (1912-96); Deanna (Dee) B. Wallace-Stone; Richard Samuel Westfall (1924-96); Augustus Schoonmaker. Possible descendants: Joseph Westfall Thompson (1869-1941); Capt. Hugh Merle Elmendorf (1895-1933).

Jurian Westphal, a son of Nicholas Jurian Westphalen, was born in Luyderop, Leydon, Netherlands in 1629 and died in New York in Ulstead County NY in 1667. He sailed from Texal, Holland aboard the ship "Den Houttuyn" June 6, 1642 and arrived at the port of New Amsterdam (New York) August 4, 1642. Jurian's father, Nicholas Jurian VA Wesphalen was born in Prussia in 1594 and died in 1655. Jurian may have been sent to America to escape service in the 30 years War, which ended in 1648, six years after Jurian came to America. He was placed in the home of Michael Jansen. He married Marretje Jansen about 1653. Maria was a daughter of Hans Jansen. Apparently the couple lived on lands belonging to Governor Stuyvestan, since Sergeant Andreas Louwrensen reported to the Governor September 28, 1658, "... as to Jurian Westphalen, he thinks he will come down by the first opportunity and see whether he can agree with your Escy. about the rent on the farm here." After Jurian died Marretje married Jacob Jansen. -courtesy familysearch.org
Juriaen was born in the Westphalia area of present Germany. He was living in Leiderdorp when he left the Netherlands on the ship DeHoutwyn on June 6, 1642 and was one of twenty-four passengers bought to America by Killian Van Rensselaer to work his lands at Fort Orange (Albany, New York). Juriaen worked one of the three farms Killiaen had on Papscanee Island in the Hudson River, a short distance south of Fort Orange. Juriaen wed Marretje Hansen at Fort Orange in 1653. In 1654, Juriaen and others moved to the Esopus Creek area to establish a settlement. This was chartered by the Dutch as the city of Wiltwick in 1661. There he and Marretje had six children:

1) Rymerick in 1654 2) Nicholas in 1657 3) Johannes in 1659

The Kingston Dutch Church was established in 1660 and Jurian's following children were christened there.

4) Abel, C: 25 Sep 1661. (Died 1689-96) 5) Symon (Simon), C: 30 Sep 1663

In 1664, Britain took over Dutch lands in America but the Dutch people could retain their land if they swore allegiance to Britain's king. The Dutch church was allowed to operate as Britain promoted the protestant faith as a force against the Catholic Church. Wiltwick was renamed Kingston by the British. Then was born:

6) Elsje (Elsie), C: 27 Jun 1666. (Died ~1687)

Jurian died in 1667 and left six children of ages one to thirteen. Marretje soon married Jacob Jansen and raised her children in Kingston.

There is no proof Juriaen is buried at the Kingston Dutch Church cemetery but his house was next to the church and the minister lived on the second floor of his house.
