About Major General William Earle

Major General William Earle was born in Liverpool in 1833. He fought in most of the major battles in the Crimea and was killed at the Battle of Kirbekan in January 1885 while in command of the River Column during Wolseley's Gordon Relief Expedition. Ian Hamilton described Earle as a martinet but also thought him a bold man who "was out for fighting".

William Earle (18 May 1833–10 February 1885) fought in the British Army (49th Regiment) during the Crimean War and later rose to the rank of Major-General. He was born in Liverpool, the son of a merchant Sir Hardman Earle and his wife Mary (née Langton), and married Mary Codrington on 21 July 1864. He had a successful military career, recognised by honours including Companion of the Order of the Bath.

He was part of the Nile Expedition attempting to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum, and was killed following the Battle of Kirbekan.

There is a bronze statue of him outside St George's Hall, Liverpool, by sculptor Charles Bell Birch.
