Joseph Bartholomew Sr., Farmer, son of John and Nancy, was born inIndiana, January 16, 1820. He joined the Mormon Church August 10, 1841, Illinois, and removed to Nauvoo in 42, assisting in the erectio nof the Temple. He came to Utah in 52, crossing the plains in an oxtrain under Capt. Outhouse, and located in Springville until 61, whenhe came to Fayette or Warm Creek. Took an active part in the Bl ackHawk war, as a lieutenant, being in both the Salina Canyon and grassValley engagements. He also served in the Black Hawk war of Illinoisand Wisconsin, in 1832, though only a boy. He is an old fro ntiersmanand a much respected pioneer of Fayette. Served as a ward teacher inthe Mormon Church for many years and once owned stock in the Gunnisonco-op. Being one of the very first settlers of Fayet te he also enjoysthe distinction of being the only merchant in town, having a small store and stock of general merchandise. Was married in HancockCounty, Illinois, Dec. 10, 1843, to Polly, daughter of Benjamin andKeziah Benson, born February 12, 1816, in New York State. They havese ven living children: John, Mary, Joseph, George, Elizabeth, Eliza and James.
