About John Frew

Birth: Jun. 17, 1821, Scotland

Death: Feb. 22, 1904

Weber County

Utah, USA

Born in the Parish of Darley, Ayershire, Scotland on Jun17, 1826. Married Jean Clotworthy May 1, 1846.

John was blessed with a beautiful voice, and before leaving Scotland he was called to sing for the Queen when she visited Ayershire.

They set sail from Liverpool on the ship called Enoch Train, on Mar. 23, 1856. Jean was sick all of the way. They also buried 2 boys at sea, ages 1 and 2 1/2.

They arrived in Boston on May 1, 1856, on their 10th wedding anniversary. From Boston they traveled by train to Iowa City. Here they obtained hand-carts and with Daniel McArthur as captain of the company their trip across the plains was started.

Not long after starting, Jean gave birth to a boy whom they named William. Jean, with baby in her arms, walked the rest of the way to Salt Lake City, often assisting her husband with the hand-cart. The older children, James and Janet ( 7 and 9 yrs) walked every step of the way barefooted. The cactus an dprickly pears pierced their feet badly.

They were among the first white people to settle Franklin, Idaho, where a fort was built to give protection. John eventually ran a sawmill in Idaho for a number of years.

In 1869, John moved to Hooper, Utah. Jean died in 1872. John married Eliza Duce and had 3 sons. John died in 1904, in Hooper, Utah.

Taken from a history by daughter Margaret Ann Frew Moore, and Daughters of Utah Pioneers History.
