About Jonathan Young

As a young man, Jonathan followed the tradition of many young Englishmen and went to sea. He married Sarah Leigh at age 22. They had one son named George.

As a mariner, he traveled back and forth between England and America. Sometimes, his passengers included missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and he was taught the gospel being baptized December 18, 1849. Jonathan decided to emmigrate to Zion and set sail on the Ellen Marie in February 1852. While on board, he married Sarah Toomer Farr, a widow from the Portsmouth Branch.

Upon arrival in Salt Lake, Jonathan built a small craft with a sail and became the first known white man to set sail on the Great Salt Lake.

Life was very difficult for the couple, because Jonathan had only known the sea. He knew nothing of farm work. Later, four children would be born to them; Brigham Jonathan, Sarah Ann, David Toomer and Fannie Jane.

Later, the family moved to Heber City where Jonathan tended the settlement's cattle. In October 1865, Jonathan died in his sleep, leaving Sarah Toomer Young a widow with five children.

Jonathan was one of the first two people buried in the cemetery. It is unknown today.
