According to her 1938 naturalization file, Lena was born in Schwislovitz. Minsk, Russia. According to JewishGen.org, there are two towns in current Belarus named Svilach, one near Poland and one near Minsk. It's the one near Minsk and Barisaw (formerly Borisov) that I think is the likely birthplace of Lena. I chose Babruysk because it is close, and is mentioned in her naturalization file. |

The 1901-05-13 date for Rae's birth came from the SSDI. According to her 1943 Canadian Naturalization file, she was born 1905-07-23, so the SSDI match might be incorrect. Reuben's birthdate is 1905-03-05, so there is something wrong in one, or both. Perhaps Rae dropped a few years because she was unmarried in 1943 and preferred to be in her 30s over her 40s. In the 1921 Census, Rachel was 19, implying a birth year of 1901 or 1902, which leaves month and day in doubt. |
