Hillel's naturalization certificate (Montreal, Sept. 13, 1916) notes that he was formerly of Ponidell?, Province of Kovno, Russia. This was the Russian Empire and is now Lithuania, and the area is the called the County of Kaunas. No entry for a similar shtetl was found in the Litvak SIG, the Lithuanian-Jewish Special Interest Group.
Hillel married into a family with a tavern or liquor store.
Hillel was a commercial fisherman. He fished wealthy peoples' lakes, splitting the proceeds 50/50. He had two wagons with nets and employed a few people and a brother.
