Martin was born September 12, 1854 in Ross township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Leaving Ross at the age of six he moved with his father to Leonidas, Michigan where he grew to young manhood. On December 24, 1874 he was united in marriage with Mary A. Miller of Leonidas in which vicinity they spent the greatest part of their married life. To this union was born seven sons and three daughters: George, Guy and Bert of Athens; Perry and Glenn of East Leroy and Clark and John of Battle Creek; Mrs. Matie Roe of Scotts; Mrs. Mabel Brunner of East Leroy and Mrs. Clifford Moyer of Battle Creek. In 1910 they moved to a farm in Leroy township where Mrs. Martin preceded him in death on June 8, 1918. He continued on the farm until after his marriage on August 23, 1919, to Mrs. Almira Sellen of Partello when they moved to East Leroy where he spent the remainder of his days; departing this life October 24, 1931 at the age of 77 years, one month and twelve days. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Almira the ten children by his earlier marriage, thirty-one grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, besides a host of neighbors and friends. Funeral was held at the Athens Congregational Church. Rev. Geo Woolcock officiated. Burial was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens.
