He served as sheriff of Miller Co., AR 1832-1836. Operated a large plantation in Red River and Lamar Counties with his brother, James. By 1860, they owned 139 slaves, putting them among the largest slave owners in the state of Texas.

Richard M Hopkins rode with General Edward H Tarrant and Capt James Bourland and a group of 69 Republic of Texas Rangers from the North Texas area on an expedition against hostile Indians encamped on the head waters of the Trinity River. The Indians had been raiding, killing, kidnapping and stealing property of setters in the North Texas area. This expedition resulted in a battle on 24 May 1841 at Village Creek in present day Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas. On this day, Capt John B Denton, namesake of Denton County, Texas was killed.
