About Sigelgaita di Benevento

Not sure why Sigelgaita is considered the daughter of Landolfo “the Red” when the PRE-NORMAN.htm source doesn’t state who her parents were from what I can tell. From my understanding the PRE-NORMAN.htm source is the one to go by. The genealogics.org source states Wanzia was Landolfo’s wife but the PRE-NORMAN.htm source states that Landolfo’s wife was Maria di Gaeta with good reason supported by someone named Stasser. Stasser also states that the source for Landolfo and Yvantia showing as married is a “late and spurious (fake) source”. Apparently there is no earlier source supporting Wanzia being Landolfo’s wife other than the one that Stasser says is late and spurious (fake).

BIOGRAPHY

Gianni II, called 'the Accursed' (Maledictus), was the son of Lamberto of Spoleto. He was the count of the palace of Salerno in 980 and acting regent for Pandolfo II of Salerno, a son of Pandolfo I 'the Iron-Head', principe di Capua e Benevento, duca di Spoleto. He was pushed out with Pandolfo II by Manso I, duke of Amalfi, in 981. The rule of Manso and his son Gianni I was oppressive and the local populace rose in revolt and elected the Spoletan Gianni II prince in 983, expelling Manso. Gianni married Sigelgaita di Benevento, daughter of Landolfo II, principe di Benevento e Capua, and his wife Wanzia, and sister of Pandolfo I 'the Iron-Head'. Their son Guaimar III would have progeny.

John II known as the "Cursed" (around 950 – between 994 and 998) was a Lombard prince, count of the palace of Salerno in 980 and regent for Prince Pandulf II.

Son of Lambert of Spoleto, he was driven out of the principality in 981, when Duke Mansone I of Amalfi overthrew the young sovereign and took possession of the throne. The government of Amalfi and his son Giovanni was very oppressive and the population of Salerno exploded in revolt. In 983 Mansone and his son were expelled and Giovanni Lamberto, duke of Spoleto, was elected prince of Salerno.

During his reign, John II attempted to establish his own control over the monastery of St. Maximus and its associated properties, but the plan failed. Together with his wife Sichelgaita he founded Santa Maria de Domno, which he placed directly under the authority of the archdiocese of Salerno. In fact the monastery was already very successful under the first abbot, Radoald, but John's attempts to control religion and ecclesiastical institutions amounted to little more than this. In January 984 he associated his son Guido with the throne, who died in 988. Between January and March 989 he associated another son, Guaimario, his successor on the throne, in his government. He left four other sons: Pandolfo, Lamberto, Giovanni and Pietro.

The rebuilding of Montepiloso Irsina, destroyed by the Saracen incursions that raided the Byzantine and Lombard territories, is attributed to him.

According to a legend reported by Pier Damiani, on the occasion of an eruption of Vesuvius, Prince John exclaimed that it was undoubtedly an omen announcing the death of a rich man, who would certainly be condemned to hell. The next day, he himself was found dead in the arms of a prostitute.
