- Identified as son of Hugo and Selma (née Berlinger) Katz in family records of W.L. Rich
- Walter Ludwig Katz was 9 years old when his father Hugo died in 1936. We do not yet know exactly when he was able to leave Germany but it was before World War II. It is possible that he entered England as part of the Kindertransport program in 1939; he would have been 12 years old. We know that Walter Ludwig KATZ was adopted by a H.P. Rich and that he changed his name to Walter Laurence Rich.
- His status as an Enemy Alien as of September 1939 is not clear; there is no index card in the Enemy Alien Tribunal Index cards recording an interview in fall, 1939 and at age 12, this is hardly surprising. But there is a document in the Enemy Alien files, dated 24 July 1943, concerning Walter Ludwig KATZ Rich. It records an "Appeal Decision" of the Regional Advisory Committee [presumably of the Birmingham area] and states "Quite satisfactory."
