Ermengol (or Armengol) VII of Urgel, known like "the one of Valencia" (? - Requena or Valencia de Alcántara, 1184), count of Urgel (1154-1184) and lord of Valladolid. He was the son of Ermengol VI of Urgel and his first wife, Arsenda de Cabrera.
Without any possibility of territorial expansion, Ermengol VII was attracted by the Castilian possessions that he had inherited from his grandmother Maria Perez. Thus, an important part of his reign passed like vassal of the king Ferdinand II of Leon, of which he was butler and lieutenant of a good number of castles of Extremadura leonesa. He was governor of Valladolid, occupying this position during his absence Fernado Rodríguez de Sandoval, as it appears in a writing of the year 1160.
He founded the canonical church of Bellpuig de las Avellanas in 1166 and granted letters of population to Agramunt in 1163 and to Balaguer in 1174. In addition, in 1164, he minted the coin of Agramunt, which was deprived of the county.
The reference of his death appears in the Gesta Comitum Barcinonensium, and indicates that in 1184 died the count Ermengol VII "with his brother Galcerán de Sales, next to Valencia". However, Ubieto argues that since his life was in the kingdom of Leon and that year the Leonese monarch and Ermengol were in Ciudad Rodrigo, at the head of a siege expedition against Caceres, the Valencia where he died should have been Valencia de Alcántara. Marriage and descent
Around 1157 he married Dulce de Foix, daughter of Roger III de Foix and Jimena de Osona, who acted as regent of the county. From this marriage were born:
Ermengol, who succeeded his father in the county of Urgel. Miracle (also called Marquesa) of Urgel. He married in November 1181 with Count Gómez González de Traba (mc 1191). [2] He contracted a second marriage in 1194 with Ponce III de Cabrera, viscount of Cabrera.
