Escudo de Oro "Arrojo Asombroso"

THE ONLY decoration ever to be awarded by General Jose Antonio Paez (1790- 1873), José Antonio de los Santos Páez Herrera, 4º Presidente de Venezuela.

Only one OUTSTANDING recipient: Gral. Guillermo Irribarren (1797- 1827), General Juan Guillermo Iribarren Chaquea, Procer.

Military Action: Banco Largo, (07.11.1816).

Captain Juan Guillermo Iribarren at twenty years of age barely, spear heading five-hundred brave men of the" Battalion Dragons ", surprised the enemy ranks with such impetus and strength that in solitary action made them surrender. So sudden was the out-leached surprise and fiercy attack that stunned the enemy by such inconceivable audacity and believing itself attacked and overwhelmed by the entire army of the fearsome Paez, that dazed by unbelief , they decided not to fire but one single shot that took Sergeant Roso Gonzalez 's life. In this Battle the enemy casualties and prisoners were countless. This action is referred to as the Battle of Banco Largo (07.11.1816), where Guillermo Irribarren along with a force of calvary (the Dragons), was able to subdue the Royalist Colonel Jose Navas.

Upon triumphantly arriving after the battle at headquarters, Páez immediately issued a special decree awarding Captain Juan Guillermo Iribarren, with a golden shield with the slogan "Arrojo Asombroso". This medal was the only one awarded by Páez throughout the course of his long career. With the prisoners taken the Infantry Battalion "Bravos de Páez" was formed and then later in the Campaign of Cundinamarca, they received the glorious title of "Vencedores en Boyacá". The Liberator for his part, upon receiving word of Iribarren's dazzling feat, promoted him to the rank of first Commander, making his leadership be recognized by all the "Husares" under his command and at the end of the Campaign of 1817 during which he continued to gather copious laurels, awarded him with the rank of Colonel (effective) of Cavalry. (December 31st, 1817). _________________________________________________
