Before 1578, the 'Singel' canal was the western edge of Amsterdam. It was constructed in two phases - in 1428 and 1450.
Between 1578 (year of the 'Alteratie', when Amsterdam chose the side of the Reformation) and 1665, Amsterdam grew from 30,000 to 160,000 residents. Only two European cities were larger - Paris and London. The influx was primarily driven by immigration of protestants from the South and the gradual transition from Antwerp's golden age to Amsterdam's golden age. The Amsterdam canals were constructed and expanded in 4 phases (the first and second between 1585-1613, the third between 1613-1625, the fourth between 1656-1665). In the fourth phase, the Gouden Bocht (Golden Bend) was constructed - Amsterdam's most prestigious address: Herengracht between uneven numbers 441-513 and even numbers 426-482. .
