Askey Cemetery, Moshannon, Pennsylvania

The full name of this cemetery is Snow Shoe-Askey Cemetery, although it's always referred to as "Askey's". The second permanent settler to the Snow Shoe region was Samuel Askey and his family. In the fall of 1818, he settled on a tract of land that now contains the cemetery bearing his name.

According to the Linn& and another booklet, done by Gilliland in which no dates were given [ but I believe in the mid-1820s to early 1830s], a schoolhouse was built on part of his land which now houses the cemetery. This schoolhouse was used as a multi-purpose meeting place, for written information states it was used also as a place of worship for all denominations and after it was made bigger, as a voting place.

Since there has been no reference to the conception of the cemetery in any of my documentation in the early years, I would assume that sometime in the 1820s to 1830s that Mr. Askey donated a part of his land, adjacent to the schoolhouse to house a present-day cemetery. The earliest grave is unknown as we have well over 100 or more graves that have no stones or identifying marks at all, and they are lost to eternity. If we knew those, I'm sure we would be able to place the conception of this cemetery easier.

In 1926 the cemetery was incorporated and a notation in the newspaper reveals that an additional parcel of land was given to the association by the Lehigh Valley Coal Company.

The Centre Domacrat Newspaper October 21, 1926

A meeting of the Snow Shoe Askey Cemetery Association was held on October 12th., in the Snow Shoe High school Auditorium and the officers were elected for the ensuing year....... The Lehigh Valley Coal Company, has kindly agreed to convey a parcel of land to be used as a cemetery, and the officers of this association propose to plot this ground off and sell it in lots at $10 and $15 each, and deed to be rendered to the purchaser by the association. The proceeds of these sales will go towards cleaning up the old cemetery, improving the new part, and create a permanent fund, the income to perpetually take care of the cemetery after being completed.
