This cemetery, located off Shady Lane on a working farm, north of Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee, was established by James Buford, Jr. (1784-1849), on land which was given him by his father, James Buford, Sr. (1746-1811). It has remained a family cemetery ever since. It contains 19 grave sites within the fenced enclosure, and 16 of these have grave monuments. Of these, the monument for James Buford is the oldest; and the monument for Douglas H. Buford is the most recent. The rest mark the graves of direct descendants of James Buford, and his wife, Mary White “Polly” Giddens Buford.
In addition, recent research indicates that there may be as many as 38 unmarked graves sites outside the fenced enclosure.
There were at least two Buford cemeteries in Giles County in the 19th century. The other one known to have existed was the Charles Buford Cemetery, located southwest of Pulaski, though it no longer exists. Charles Buford was James Buford Jr.’s brother. The remains of those buried at the Charles Buford Cemetery were re-interred at Maplewood Cemetery, in Pulaski, Tennessee.
This cemetery has been recently restored by Buford family descendants, with the much appreciated help from the current land owner. All of the graves found with markers have been fully restored and are documented in the attached memorials and photos.
