Profiles

Cabanatuan started as a component 'barrio' and 'visita' of Gapan which was founded in 1595. It's name has its origin from the word "Banatu", a plant that is said to be widely found in the area in the distant past and was coined similarly with other places like Caalibangbangan (<Alibangbang), Catuguian (<Tugui), Calipahan (<Lipa). Cabanatuan literally means "a place where Banatu is abundant".

In 1700, Cabanatuan became an independent parish with Banga-banga (Sta. Rosa), Pulong Buli (Sto. Domingo), and Catuguian (Talavera) as its component barrios which all later became independent pueblos and parishes.

For a more comprehensive history of Cabanatuan parish, read Ravaged by Time, Standing for the Future published by the St. Nichoas of Tolentino Cathedral Parish, Diocese of Cabanatuan.
