

Jānis Cimze founded a seminary - called also as Cimze Seminary or Vidzeme Teachers' Seminary or later Walk's Seminary in 1839 in Wolmar (Livonia (current Valmiera in Latvia)) and in 1849 the seminary moved to Walk (Livonia (joint town of current Valka in Latvia and Valga in Estonia)). Students to that seminary came among the Latvian (3/4) and Estonian (1/4) speaking population throughout the Livonia and from neighbouring provinces. In total, there were 479 graduates, in addition 4 toshers and 24 short course participants. Teaching language was German.
The seminary is also known as: Das Ritterschaftliche Parochiallehrer-Seminar zu Livland, Vidzemes skolotāju seminārs, Cimzes seminārs, Zimses seminārs, Cimze seminar, Valga seminar
The main aim of the project is to collect and present the information about the persons who has been got their education at that seminary and made the major input to the Latvian and Estonian cultural development.

In Estonian: Valga seminar, ka Cimze seminar, Valmiera seminar, 1839 Volmaris pastor C. F. Walteri algatusel ja Liivimaa rüütelkonna toetusel asutatud õppeasutus. 1849 viidi seminar Valka. 1853 valmis 2-korruseline koolihoone, õppeotstarbeks rajati kooliaed. Vastu võeti vähemalt 17-aastasi noormehi. Õppeaeg oli 3 aastat, õppetöö toimus saksa keeles. Koolis said ettevalmistuse tulevased kihelkonnakoolmeistrid ja köstrid. 1881. aastani oli seminari juhataja Jānis Cimze. 1871 hakati õpilasi vastu võtma igal aastal, 1879 pikendati õppeaega 4 aastani. Suurenes pedagoogika osatähtsus, aluseks võeti Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi ja Friedrich Diesterwegi põhimõtted. Praktikatunde anti 1873 avatud harjutuskoolis. 1850 korraldati Valga semiaris Eestimaa esimesed koolmeistrite täienduskursused. 1887. aastal muudeti seminar venestamise tulemusena köstrite kooliks ning 1890 rüütelkonna otsusega suleti. Valga semianris sai hariduse 479 tulevast õpetajat, nendest umbes 100 olid eestlased, sealhulgas Joosep Kapp, Andreas Erlemann, Ado Grenzstein, Carl Robert Jakobson, Johannes Eglon, Mihkel Kampmaa, Aleksander Kunileid, Aleksander Läte ja Friedrich August Saebelmann.
