Students to that seminary came among the Latvian (3/4) and Estonian (1/4) speaking population throughout the Livonia and from neighbouring provinces. In total, there were 479 graduates, in addition 4 toshers and 24 short course participants. Teaching language was German.

Brief history of the seminary

In Estonian: Valga seminar, ka Cimze seminar, Valmiera seminar, 1839 Volmaris pastor C. F. Walteri algatusel ja Liivimaa rüütelkonna toetusel asutatud õppeasutus. 1849 viidi seminar Valka. 1853 valmis 2-korruseline koolihoone, õppeotstarbeks rajati kooliaed. Vastu võeti vähemalt 17-aastasi noormehi. Õppeaeg oli 3 aastat, õppetöö toimus saksa keeles. Koolis said ettevalmistuse tulevased kihelkonnakoolmeistrid ja köstrid. 1881. aastani oli seminari juhataja Jānis Cimze. 1871 hakati õpilasi vastu võtma igal aastal, 1879 pikendati õppeaega 4 aastani. Suurenes pedagoogika osatähtsus, aluseks võeti Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi ja Friedrich Diesterwegi põhimõtted. Praktikatunde anti 1873 avatud harjutuskoolis. 1850 korraldati Valga semiaris Eestimaa esimesed koolmeistrite täienduskursused. 1887. aastal muudeti seminar venestamise tulemusena köstrite kooliks ning 1890 rüütelkonna otsusega suleti. Valga semianris sai hariduse 479 tulevast õpetajat, nendest umbes 100 olid eestlased, sealhulgas Joosep Kapp, Andreas Erlemann, Ado Grenzstein, Carl Robert Jakobson, Johannes Eglon, Mihkel Kampmaa, Aleksander Kunileid, Aleksander Läte ja Friedrich August Saebelmann.
