It would appear that Henry of Edmonstone is the first member of this family on record. He held land at Edmundiston near Edinburgh, as the tenant in chief of Dunfermline Abbey. His name is noticed in a number of undated deeds recorded in the Dunfermline Registrum, including one by which Abbot William and the monks of Dunfermline confirm that they have given him permission to erect a mill, a smithy and a brewhouse, on the land he held of them, and that he agrees to pay twenty shillings annually in return for this privilege. In this deed he is identified as "H. filiu E." from which circumstance it has been supposed that he was the son of a man named Edmund, and that the land he held was named Edmundiston because it had previously been held by his father. Dunfermline Registrum: 224 It seems quite likely too, probable even, that Henry of Edmonstone is the man of the same name who also held land in the same neighbourhood from Henry of Craigmiller, If as is suggested this is actually the case then he died before 11 July 1253. Dunfermline Registrum: 200
A second man named Henry of Edmonstone succeeded to the lands of Edmonstone. He may be the son, or the grandson of the first Henry but evidence of relationship has not been found. The younger Henry of Edmonstone died at the faith and peace of the sovereign before 29 September 1359, the date upon which his son John was returned as his nearest lawful heir. He died vested and seised in the lands of Edmonstone, the fee he held of Dunfermline Abbey. Dunfermline Registrum: 388
