Notes a. Note: Am sending you all I have on Abigail including my notes. As you will see Charles DIXWELL and Abigail are the grandparents of Colonel John DIXWELL, the regicide, who was one of the signers of the death warrant for King Charles the 1st who fled to America and lived out his life in semi-seclusion in New Haven, Connecticut (now USA). Colonel John DIXWELl is my great granddaughters 9th great grandfather. Abigail HERDSON No birth or baptism found yet. Proof of her parentage-"Basil DIXWELL nephew and heir of John HERDSON, son of John's sister. John HERDSON died 1622, buried at Hakinge [ Hawkinge] son of Henry HERDSON of London." D'Elboux Manuscript # 688 ]57-2r5c08 & 57 2r5c09] Also:" Henry HERDSON/HUDSON, the elder, left 3 daughters, one of them, Abigail, married Charles DIXWELL, Esq., of Coton, in the county of Warwick and had issue. 1. William, who inherited Coton , and was the ancestor of the DIXWELLS of Coton Hall, extinct baronets. 2. Edward, named after his mothers brother, Edward HUDSON 3. Humphrey 4. Basil " A Historical Inquiry Concerning Henry HUDSON" p 44. [Basil DIXWELL born 27 Dec. 1585 Coton Hall, Warwickshire, youngest son of Charles ,inherited his uncle John HERDSONS estates in Kent] Not mentioned in the above book is a daughter, Barbara DIXWELL named for her grandmother [Barbara [Watson] HERDSON] Charles & Abigail had 5 children. " John DIXWELL, the regicide, younger son of William DIXWELL of Coton Hall near Rugby, Warwickshire and Grandson of Charles DIXWELL and Abigail [Herdson]DIXWELL" " DIXWELL Papers" edited by Franklin B DEXTER-" New Haven Historical Papers" vol 6 p 340 Of interest, but not proved- From The Medieval Studies Unit Salt Lake City, UT USA Abigaile HERDSON married 30 Nov 1569 Saint Mary Aldermary, London Charles DIXON? [could this be a mistake and it is DIXWELL?] Abigaile HERDSON of Stourton Lincolnshire M001511 A Historical Inquiry Concerning Henry Hudson p 34: Sir Bernard BURKE, in his account of the DIXWELL Family, speaks of Henry HUDSON, Esq., of Stourton, in Lincolnshire. Although I have been unable to trace him to that locality, owing doubtless to the absence of the proper authorities, I am decidedly of the opinion that Henry HUDSON possessed property in that neighborhood at an early period; I am the more firmly convinced of the fact, as it explains the constant intercourse, and intimate business relations, evidently existing between him & Edward, Lord CLINTON, who built the fine mansion at Sempringham, and had other great estates in Lincolnshire. [This leads me to believe that the Abigaile above who married in 1569 is indeed the daughter of Henry HERDSON] Abigail [Herdson] DIXWELL died in 1635, Coton ,Warwickshire [year of death on the DIXWELL monument located in the parish church, Holy Trinity Church of Churchover, Warwickshire.[ Source Monumental Inscriptions for Holy Trinity Church, Churchover, Warwickshire on microfiche available from the BMSHG[ Birmingham Midland Society [of] Heraldry & Genealogy] Charles DIXWELL, Esquire; of Coton Hall Warwickshire, date of birth not found, son of William DIXWELL and wife Elizabeth KNIGHT. And of 4 sons, and one daughter that issued from them Viz: William DIXWELL Esq., Edward DIXWELL, Humphrey DIXWELL, Sir Basil DIXWELL, Knight & Baronet, and Barbara DIXWELL; all whose figures this work doth represent." My notes on John HERDSON as follows: " Mr John HERDSON who resided at the manor house at Terlingham, in this parish, and was buried [1622] in Hawkinge church, where there is a plain monument to his memory. WE have already noticed the fine one in Folkestone church, erected conjointly to his brother and himself. At his death, having no children, he devised his property to his nephew Basill DIXWELL, Esq., who then occupied his uncle's residence at Terlingham, where in the 3rd year of King Charles the First he kept his shrievalty for the county with great honour & hospitality, and was the year following created a baronet. Having rebuilt the mansion at Brome, He removed there, and dying unmarried, the title became extinct and the estates were left by will to his nephew Mark DIXWELL, the son of his elder brother William DIXWELL, of Coton in Warwickshire who married Elizabeth, daughter of William READ, Esq., of Folkestone, by whom he was the father of Basill DIXWELL, created a baronet by Charles II in 1660. Sir Basill DIXWELLmarried the daughter of Sir Thomas PEYTON, of KNowlton, and his son, Sir Basill DIXWELL, of Brome, in 1697, alienated these manors. with the park house & grounds, etc., to Jacob des BOUVERIES, Esq., of London, descended honourable extraction in Flanders, who renouncing the tenets of the Roman religion, came into England in 1567 and appears to have settled at Canterbury. source- " A Descriptive & Historical Account of Folkestone & its Neighbourhood with Gleanings from the Municipal Records" PP 135-136 " Henry HERDSON/HUDSON left 8 sons. 3 of these, Thomas HUDSON, John HUDSON and Edward or Edmund HUDSON are mentioned in the " Calendar of Proceedings in the Court of Chancery, Reign of Elizabeth" II 24. From the same source I learn that Thomas HUDSON, Esq., conveyed to his brother John HUDSON, for certain purposes, the manors of Newing Belhouse, Newington Bartram, Newington Fee, Damyott, Brensett, Sachfilde, and Stepiars, in the county of Kent.[ Col Proc. Court of Chanc. Rg Elis.,II 62.] This John HUDSON, dying without issue bequeathed his estates to his sister's youngest son, Sir Basil DIXWELL. Bart. who transplanted himself accordingly from the county of Warwick, to Terlingham in Kent County, where he continued until the year 1622, when he removed to Broome, in the same county, also a manor of his, on which he had recently erected a handsome mansion-house. He served the office of Sheriff in the 2nd year of Charles II and was created a Baronet by that monarch 18th Feb 1627. He died unmarried in 1641, when the Baronetcy became extinct and his estate devolved under his will. upon his nephew Mark DIXWELL, Esq. son of William, who married Elizabeth READ, daughter of M. READ, and sister of W.READ Esq., of Folkestone, and was the ancestor of Sir Henry OXENDEN, Bart., the present possessor of the ancient estates of John HUDSON, the male line of the DIXWELLS having failed.* [Burke's Extinct & Dormant Baronetcies" pp161-162]. " A Historical Inquiry Concerning Henry HUDSON" pp 45-46. Consistory Court of Canterbury Will Index HERDSON, John Folkestone- written 1621; proved 1622 45/247a 45/341, 354 Left his estates to his sister's son Basil DIXWELL. John HERDSON died 1622, buried at Hakinge/ Hawkinge son of Henry HERDSON of London. D'Elboux Manusripts Hawkinge church dedicated to St Michael is a long unceiled narrow building, without one architectural attraction; built of flints, with a low wooden turret at the west end, containg a single bell. In the chancel is a memorial of John HERDSON, Esq. [1622] to whom the large monument in Folksetone Church was erected by his nephew and heir. source- A Descriptive & Historical Account of Folkestone & its Neighbourhood with Gleanings from the Municipal Records" Hawkinge, lies about a mile north of the Dover Road. I have more if needed, but feel this shows that Abigail is one of Henrys daughters. Do you have any more information on the parents and ancestry of Barbara WATSON? Barbara appears to be the niece of Edward WATSON whose name appears with Henry HERDSON in many monastic land purchases. Need to prove this is the Edward WATSON that was granted Rockingham Castle by Henry the 8th and has been the Watson Family home for over 500 years. My dilemma is proving who the parents of Colonel John DIXWELL are. I have conflicting statements that Col. Johns father was William DIXWELL and others that state it was Edward DIXWELL, both sons of Charles and Abigail DIXWELL. What wills I can find on line lead me to believe that Edward is his father. Trying to read old English wills is a harrowing experience. However what little I can glean is that William did not have a son Mark or John DIXWELL. Research on Col John is most difficult in England. He is IGNORED in most of their records, and was certainly persona non grata. What fun! Hope this isnt too confusing. Any questions-please ask and I will do my best to answer. Enjoy!
