Irish DNA project

Participating in the Irish DNA project gives an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your research of your family tree. We will also discover which family trees are related.

If you have taken an DNA test and you have Irish ancestors or are Irish please join this DNA group to learn more about your DNA and ancestors.

  • In order to participate it is required to upload the DNA results to Geni.

We also have a Facebook group for Geni users who have taken a dna test, you will need to upload the raw data to Genesis Gedmatch.com for the tool to work, this tool finds dna matches between members in the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/genidnamatchfinder/

What can you do here?

By joining this project you can get in touch with other members who have Irish DNA and discuss outcomes and matches, and find people who are researching the same surnames

How to participate

  • 1.Click on the action button on the top right and select join project from the drop-down list.
  • 2. Add the surname(s) of your Irish ancestors to the alphabetical list below this allows other project members to find mutual surnames that are researched. If you have a tree on Geni you can also enter the URL of the profile

Finding DNA matches

If you have taken a DNA test you can find all your matches on your profile page under the DNA tab. Once you have your surname listed in this project you might be contacted by other DNA members researching the same surname. Another way to find possible matches is to start a discussion in the discussion section of this project see Project discussions Additional : if you can not find a match here on Geni and you have taken the FamilyFinder autosomal test you can also upload the rawdata file from FTDNA, 23andme and Ancestry.com to the free website Gedmatch.com, there are clear instructions available on www.gedmatch.com how to upload the rawdata.
