Located upon this elevated ground was an irregular star-shaped entrenchment or fortified camp constructed by the American army during the fall of 1776. This redoubt was built to protect the sawmill and blockhouse at the falls of the La Chute River about a half-mile to the south east of this site. On July 2, 1777 the British army captured this post as it prepared to attack Ticonderoga during General John Burgoyne's invasion of northern New York.
Civilian burials were begun here during the early part of the 19th century with a number of the earliest families being laid to rest upon the remains of the old military redoubt. The Mount Hope Cemetery Association was formed in 1871 with land donated, or purchased, from the Clark family. The Association incorporated in 1895 and acquired more land from Laura Pond. Additional lands were acquired in 1927.
In June 1999 the Town of Ticonderoga took over the cemetery from the Association and established a Cemetery Board, the first members being William G. Dolback, Gerald Crammond, Richard Bennett, Susan Bouchard & Sandra Hurlburt.
