The "Conflict" was a twenty year old ship of 1171 tons, chartered by the Shaw Saville Co and Captain: Hardy. She was a full-rigged ship, built at Liverpool in 1855. This was her first voyage to New Zealand.

John Winter wrote an account in verse of his 'Voyage of the Conflict' from London to Wellington, 5 May-2 Aug 1874' published shortly after arrival, in the Wellington newspaper. It may be viewed in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington.

On this voyage "Conflict" carried 461 emigrants, 163 male adults, 132 female adults, 70 male children, 73 female children and 16 infants.
