Profiles

Pine Cliff Cemetery is located on the east side of State Highway 53, adjacent to the Beaver Creek bridge and just north of the historic downtown square.

The cemetery consists of an upper table and lower table separated by a steep, grassy hill. It is bounded on the east and north by residential areas and on the west by State Highway 53. The southern boundary of the cemetery is a high, wooded cliff which drops off sharply to Beaver Creek below. The southwest quadrant of the cemetery is on the lower table nearest the cliff, beginning to the right of the front entrance and extending back to the base of the
steep hill. The earliest burial in this section is dated 1856. The northwest quadrant is also on the lower table, beginning to the left of the front gate and extending back to the caretaker’s shed. Burials here date from 1912. The northeast quadrant of the cemetery on the upper table has a road running through it.

There is a bronze plaque which reads: the beautification of this road is a gift to the Pine Cliff Cemetery in loving memory of Erdmann Walther and Emma Walther by their daughter Lillian Walther Kiesewetter Nov. 15, 1969. There is a stone in this quadrant for Sally Tower who died in 1837. Since this was well before the town of Galesville was founded, it is unclear as to whether this is an actual grave marker or a commemorative stone placed in the Tower family plot at some later date. All other burials date from 1856.The southeast quadrant is on the upper table closest to the cliff. The earliest burial here is that of Charles Stanley French in 1856. This section includes many of the earliest town notables. There is a small potter’s field.
