Ritual / Witchcraft-related Crime and / or Muti Murder Victims


"Muti murder" may be loosely defined as a murder where the intention is to gather human body parts for use in traditional African medicine (Minaar, 2001)' The purpose is usually to improve an individual's or a community's circumstances.

"Muti/Muthi" is a Zulu word meaning medicine. It is therefore a mistake to assume that whenever the word muti is used, crime is involved. Even medicine prescribed by a doctor in a hospital is called muti.

A traditional healer usually advocates the act after being consulted by a client. A third party carries out the actual murder. The traditional healer is rarely involved in the murder.

Human body parts are used because they are considered more powerful than the usual ingredients (e.g., roots, herbs, other plant material, animal parts, seawater) or methods used in traditional medicine. namely, the human body parts are believed to contain the person's "life essence." They therefore are a fast track to achieving what the person who uses the muti wants to achieve. Characteristically, the traditional healer "consults" the ancestors to determine the cause of the problem and then prescribes the treatment.

The victim usually dies from the injuries sustained during the removal of the body parts' Traditionally, the victim must be alive when the body parts are removed because the body parts then retain the person's life essence, thereby increasing the power of the Muti.

Conservative estimates are that at least 300 people have been murdered for their body parts in the past decade in South Africa. Dr Anthony Minnar, of the Institute for Human Rights and Criminal Justice in South Africa, fears the toll could be much higher.

Aim and Scope

This project is intended to record as many victims of Muti Murders as possible, as well as other ritual and witchcraft related murders, to create "Tribute Profiles" for the victims and link them to our Geni tree.
