Rystead originates from the Norwegian name Rysstad. This name means land of the mare (female horse). Rysstad is a small village in the county of Valle, in the municipality of Aust-Agder, Norway. The name Rysstad goes further back to the Icelandic/Old Norse word hryssu (mare). The horse symbol was chosen to be the official symbol of the Rystead Clan in November 2018. It has been recently discovered in some records from 1931 that the name was gradually changed from the Rystad spelling to Rystead.
