He was Superintendant General Education in The Cape Colony South Africia, born Stonebyres Falls of Clyde in Lanarkshire 1844 and died in Cape Town South Africia in 1934. At Glasgow University he was recognized for his uncommon mathematical ability. In 1871 he was appointed assistant professon af mathematics at the University of Glasgow.His first book, theTreatise on The Theory of Determinants (McMillian) appeared in 1882 and a second in1890, he wrote many other books on the subject. In 1892 the Post of Superintendent General of Education in the Cape Colony became vacant and he was appointed was to that position by Mr Cecil Rhodes.
