Unable to enter white owned cemeteries for burial, nine men, born enslaved, gathered at Friendship Baptist Church and organized the South-View Cemetery Association. The Charter was secured from the State of Georgia on April 21, 1886. South-View Cemetery is the oldest African-American Not-For Profit Corporation in the country and the final resting place for over 70,000 African Americans. Many well known Atlantans are buried in Historic South-View dating back to 1886. South-View Cemetery is located about 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta. The cemetery is comprised of over 200 well manicured acres of land with thousands of burial spaces and acres of undeveloped wooded areas that will make the cemetery operational for decades to come. Beautiful landscaping, monuments and memorials are also included in the area. South-View's Founders Mausoleum opened August 1, 2009, giving families an option for above ground burials. The cemetery has beautiful landscaping, monuments and memorials also included in the area.
