History
Location: Sustipan
Sustipan (it. Cimitero St. Steffano, Cimitero Sustipan, eng, St.Stephen's Cemetery) is a small peninsula located not far from the center of the city of Split, which closes the Split port of the southwest. There was a Christian basilica in the late antique, on which the medieval monastery of St. Stjepan under the pines, which had a great reputation in Split. The monastery has lived for a time (since 1078) the last member of Trpimirović's royal dynasty Stjepan II. († 1090/91) after renouncing all honor and crown in favor of the Croatian ban Demetrius Zvonimir.
The monastery had collapsed since the 14th century, when the monks left it, to be eventually destroyed in 1832 when the town administration decided to build a town cemetery there. After the Second World War, the cemetery was demolished and moved (one part) to today's location on Lovrinac, and the Sustipan area was turned into a park.
In this cemetery were buried citizens, soldiers, priests, families, children during the history of the city of Split during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1st and 2nd World War.
Individuals from the burial were burial: in tombs of individual Brotherhoods, tombs of particular abundances or separate graves, there were even graves that had no markings. For more details see this article: Sustipanske grobnice / Sustipan - St.Stephen's Cemetery' graves, gravestones
SUSTIPAN in 1959 - years of destruction of the cemetery
In 1959 it was decided to collapse to be one of the most beautiful Mediterranean cemeteries on Sustipan, which, in the opinion of many experts and chroniclers, is the big culturocide in Split history. Since the foundation of the cemetery in 1826 until the Second World War there were more than 50,000 Splinchians buried there, more than Split had live inhabitants in the forties of the last century.
This monstrous destruction of the city's history was also helped by the profession, the art historian and the urban planner. The political decision to support for destroyed the cemetery was supported by Stjepan Gunjača and Kruno Prijatelj, as well as brothers Jerko and Tomislav Marasović, who drafted a proposal for a new Sustipan without cemetery.
The plan was supported by leading Split planners - Stanko Dvornik, Milorad Družeić and Budimir Pervan. By abstaining from the meeting, Milan Prelog, Andro Mohorovičić and Cvito Fisković, who was then the director of the Conservation Institute, were refused. Vladimir Rismondo, Ksenija Cicarelli and Duško Kečkemet, who only sharply opposed the destruction of this graveyard, had a distinct opinion.
At that time, the mayor of Split was a mayor Rade Dumanić. Unlike the demolition of the Monumental Fountain on the Row, it is well known that most of the abovementioned ones who were to demolish and devastate the cemetery were the winners of the City of Split award for life. It is unknown whether this case of the cemetery destruction on Sustipan was taken into account as one of their significant achievements.
During the demolition of the cemetery, Mr. Duško Kečkemet, who is also credited with the preserved tombstones from the cemetery. He then rushed into the truck of tombstones from the cemetery as far as he could and drove them to the Museum of Archaeological Monuments and the City Museum of Split, where they are kept today. About two-thirds of the deceased stayed on Sustipan, and some of the bones ended in the hole near the church of St. Stephen.
On the west side of the cemetery were the tombs of various fraternities, and these bones were scattered, and probably still exist in the deeper layers today. Only a small part of mortal remains and tombs were transferred to Tršćenica (Lovrinac cemetery today), as well as the tombs of the Split mayors, and from some members of the Split family to the family tombs, while some of the mentioned mortal remains are located in the common grave at the Lovrinac cemetery. Several years after the destruction of the cemetery, the remains of the destroyed graves could still be seen. Part of the bones ended up in the sea, but there are no traces of it, but there are still more living witnesses who have watched it and can testify about it as a Mr. Vinko Jelaska, on Geni - Vinko Jelaska, fb

Povijest / History
Lokacija: Sustipan
Sustipan (tal. Cimitero St. Steffano, Cimitero Sustipan, eng.
- Za detaljnije pogledajte članak / For more details see this article: Sustipanske grobnice / Sustipan - St.Stephen's Cemetery' graves, gravestones
Vinko Jelaska, on Geni - Vinko Jelaska, fb
