The St Barth colony was all about tax free trade, including slave trade. And all about the port itself, the best sheltered harbor in the region. The American War of Independence, the Napoleonic Wars, the French revolution, the Haitian revolution, the West Indies wars between the major powers, the "end" of the Transatlantic slave trade. It all created great opportunities for the colony. Legal and illegal trade was booming. In 1800, Gustavia was the 5th biggest city in Sweden. The small rock island Fourchue Island (Five Islands) a few miles from St Barth was a smuggler's paradise. But a lot of the illegal trade was done in the open. When the slave trade was banned in other places, it continued on St Barth.
