Tracing the beginning and end of the illness, Reported as an epidemic during the years of 1911-1913, we would like to trace the year before and a few years after the epidemic to see if there was a marked decline in deaths. Please be sure and add the county of death, city if known, death certificate, or newspaper obituary to the profile if it mentions the reason for death if you can't locate the death certificate.
Texas Meningitis Epidemic 1911–1913. Origin of the Meningococcal Vaccine. During the unusually cold and rainy cold months of 1911 through 1913 Cerebrospinal Meningitis Epidemic spread through the State of Texas before antibiotics were developed that could treat the disease. Many people lost their lives during this time. Dallas and Austin being the larger cities had the largest number of deaths. The State Legislature lost several many members:
