Profiles

This project aims to list profiles of Ukrainian opera singers. Every person who performed on the opera stage in Ukraine or was known as an opera singer from Ukraine in other countries will fit this project.

If you have a Ukrainian individual in your family tree who was known for her/his performances on the opera stage, please add them to this project. It would be great if brief biographies were included in the profile description.

  • Within opened profile page use the 'Actions' button to "Add to project". Select this project (you must be on the list of collaborators in this project to see it on the selection list). You may add any public profile that you have permission to edit. If you do not have permission to edit the profile, a request is sent to the profile manager to add the profile to the project.

Note: Only public profiles may be added to projects.

  • Please also reference this project after you upload images that show Ukrainian opera singers wearing their stage clothes during performances in action.

All the selected pictures can be found under "Photos and documents" - mark on the right side of the page.

This is a list of opera singers from Ukraine, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Empire, including ethnic Ukrainians and people of other ethnicities. This list includes those who were born in Ukraine/Soviet Union/Poland but later emigrated, and those, who were born elsewhere but immigrated to the country and performed there for a long time.

Opera came to the Russian Empire in the 18th century. At first, Italian opera troupes presented primarily Italian-language operas. Later, some Ukrainian composers serving in the Russian Imperial Court, such as Dmitry Bortniansky and Maksym Berezovsky, began to write operas in French and Italian. Composers in the 19th century included Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, Mykola Lysenko, and Mykhailo Verbytsky. Their traditions were carried on to the 20th century by Yuliy Meitus, Heorhiy Maiboroda, Stanyslav Lyudkevych, and Oleksandr Bilash. The Kyiv Opera Theatre remains Ukraine's leading opera and ballet venue.

Many Ukrainian opera singers rose to fame in the 19th century, but it was the 20th century that saw the appearance of many world-renowned, well-remembered, and still popular soloists.
