The earliest monument found is for a child named George E. Steckle who died September 6, 1881. The cemetery was originally seven acres and has a number of fruit trees. The property originally belonged to the Merriman family. The grantor was James L. Shaw.
The Motown singer Jackie Wilson is buried here with his mother, Eliza. A bench in front of the mausoleum is inscribed "Jackie - The Complete Entertainer." Many of the early records (before 1950) are missing which makes the transcriptions of the markers a valuable resource.
Originally, the cemetery was for everyone, but today, it is mainly for black folks.
