The Buchholtz family in South Africa are all related, even though there have been changes in the spelling of the surname. First to arrive was Carl Buchholtz with his wife Louise and eight children aboard the ship Johann Cesar; which sailed from Hamburg, Germany. Carl Buchholtz born in 1813 and Louise his wife in 1827. Carl was a miller by profession. They arrived in East London , South Africa in 1859. Carl was from Damerow a very small town on the German - Polish border. Fred Buchholtz I understand became Mayor of East London, and there is also a street named after him (Buchholtz Street) in one of the suburbs. A branch of the Buchholtz family I knew moved to Johannesburg in the 1950's. Their children were Peter, Andrew, Trevor (who died at the age of 40 years old ) Mearle, Athalie, and Heather. Most are alive to-day.
